It doesn’t matter whether the ‘sugar’ is from sugar cane, beet sugar, or high fructose corn syrup; in the end the calorie (kilojoule) load is pretty much the same. If you consume more cals (kilojoules) than your body needs, then you will gain excess weight. If your weight is currently stable and you drink an average of a can (375 ml (12 fl oz) a day, then you would lose up to 10 kg (that’s about 22 lb) of body fat by ditching the drink. How easy is that? If your weight is increasing, you have a good chance of at least preventing further weight gain and maybe getting some loss when you ditch the sweet soft drink . If you have a gastric band or lapband, then ditching the sweet drinks is essential for good long-term success.
